Sacred Sites and Temples - Introduction

Gateways Between Worlds

Bali’s temples are more than structures — they are portals between heaven and earth

Scattered across mountain ridges, nestled deep in jungle valleys, or standing tall near the ocean's edge, Bali’s sacred sites and temples are woven into the island’s spiritual fabric. A fair estimate counts more than 20,000 Hindu temples spread over the island. To the Balinese, these are not simply places of worship—they are living embodiments of divine presence and cosmic order. Each temple is designed with deep intentionality, reflecting Tri Hita Karana—the Balinese philosophy of harmony between the Divine, humanity, and nature.

The layout of a temple mirrors the layers of the cosmos, from the outermost earthly realm to the inner sanctum where the sacred is most concentrated. Gateways, courtyards, and shrines are not merely architectural elements; they represent thresholds between the seen and unseen. From grand temples like Pura Besakih, the Mother Temple on the slopes of Mount Agung, to hidden village sanctuaries whispered about in local lore, each sacred site pulses with its unique spiritual energy. Some are aligned with water, others with ancestral energies, and some serve as channels to specific deities or protective spirits.

Magical experience

I remember one of the first temples I visited (about 25 years ago) is Pura Batur Sari in Desa Batuan, a good example of what I mentioned. We rented a sarong on the opposite side of the street, and in that respectful outfit, we entered the temple. The temple is on a relatively busy street, and the noise was still quite annoying in the first compartment of the temple. However, when we entered the second compartment, it was as if we had entered a soundproof room. This sacred place was utterly silent. Magical. The location of every temple — whether high in the mountains or at the meeting point of river and sea — is no accident. The Balinese understand the land as sacred, and temple placement honors its energetic lines and spiritual nodes. This blog category will guide you through Bali’s holy geography, symbolic temple architecture, and the deeper meanings that infuse every ritual and offering. You’ll learn to approach these spaces reverently and open yourself to their subtle wisdom. Bali invites you to step gently into this world where earth meets spirit, whether you're a pilgrim, seeker, or simply curious traveler.
